Writers come together to unveil Kannada dictionary in Bengaluru

The Kannada Shabdartha Kosha stands as a capstone to his decades of rigorous linguistic discipline and dedication to the language.

The Kannada Shabdartha Kosha (Kannada dictionary), authored by late scholar and writer T K Anantanarayana, was unveiled at the Indian Institute of Culture in Basavanagudi on Wednesday.

At the event, the speakers paid rich tribute to Anantanarayana, a former government school teacher, whose comprehensive scholarly output was primarily authored between the 1930s and 1960s. The Kannada Shabdartha Kosha stands as a capstone to his decades of rigorous linguistic discipline and dedication to the language. A particularly poignant highlight was the acknowledgement of the author’s sons — Prof A Sreenivasan (80) and A Pattabhiraman (77) — in the completion of the final compilation, preservation and publication of the work.

Nadoja Dr Go Ru Channabasappa, renowned litterateur, doyen of Kannada Vachana literature and president of the 2025 Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, said, “A dictionary is the cultural conscience of a language. The Kannada Shabdartha Kosha by T K Anantanarayana is not merely a reference book, but a monumental intellectual legacy that will guide generations of Kannada readers, writers and scholars.”

Noted writer, critic, academician and quiz master N Someshwara said, “This Shabdartha Kosha reflects decades of rigorous scholarship and linguistic discipline. It is an indispensable resource for students, researchers, translators, and all those engaged seriously with the Kannada language.”

Mysuru-based Skanray plans regional airline

Services proposed from Mysuru with three ATR-72 aircraft by mid-April 2026.

The company is preparing to launch ‘Skanjet Aviation’ from Mysuru, with a Rs. 150-200 crore regional airline plan, positioning the city as its operational base to tap growing demand for regional air travel and the Government’s push to improve connectivity to smaller cities.

Skanray Technologies Managing Director Vishwaprasad Alva told Star of Mysore this morning that, subject to regulatory approvals and operating licences, the company aims to launch air services from Mysuru by mid-April 2026.

“Five years ago, we discussed strengthening air services from Mysuru with then MP Prathap Simha, following the Centre’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) Regional Connectivity Scheme. Since then, we have studied the aviation ecosystem in depth, engaging with aircraft manufacturers, operators, investors and aggregators. We believe now the time is right,” Alva said.

Amaravati as a connectivity hub

‘Skanjet’ plans to launch operations from Mysuru, while now-developing Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh as a connectivity hub for both domestic and intl. routes.

“Mysuru makes strategic sense. It is a hub for exhibitions and health tourism, with major projects such as a semiconductor hub coming up. It is also an edu-tech centre and a future Electronics System Design and Manufacturing hub,” Alva noted.

The company has held discussions with both the State and Central Governments and is awaiting licences and statutory clearances from the Civil Aviation authorities. Policy support and assurances from the Centre and the State will be critical during the initial phase, Alva said.

Three ATR-72 aircraft

Skanjet’ proposes to begin operations with three ATR-72 aircraft, connecting Mysuru with Hyderabad, Goa, Mangaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Tirupati and Mumbai. The fleet is expected to expand to six aircraft within a year.

“We estimate an initial investment of Rs. 150-200 crore, with leased aircraft. Discussions are underway with aircraft manufacturers and leasing firms. We are not people with deep pockets. Capital will largely come from close contacts and high-net-worth individuals willing to back the venture,” Alva said, adding that funding will be raised through a mix of equity and debt.

He said, Skanray has sought assurances of fair and consistent policy treatment from both Governments.  “If policy remains stable, a regional airline can break even within two years,” he added.

The move comes amid growing scrutiny of market concentration in Indian aviation, following IndiGo’s recent large-scale flight cancellations that stranded thousands of passengers. IndiGo currently commands around 64 percent of the domestic market.

AI Centre of Excellence for Healthcare established at IISc in Bengaluru

The centre operates as a multidisciplinary hub, bringing together clinicians, data scientists, and AI researchers.

The Translational AI for Networked Universal Healthcare (TANUH) Foundation has been established at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru as a dedicated AI Centre of Excellence in Healthcare to advance AI-driven healthcare innovation at scale in the country.

This has been established in line with the government of India’s vision of ‘Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India’, and the Ministry of Education has set up four Centres of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (AI-CoEs), each hosted by a premier academic institution in India, including IISc.

IISc informed that the TANUH AI-CoE is a Section 8 not-for-profit company that focuses on developing and deploying scalable AI solutions for the effective management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at the point of care.

The centre operates as a multidisciplinary hub, bringing together clinicians, data scientists, and AI researchers.

Nine faculty members from IISc, spanning digital health, machine learning, and public health, anchor the centre’s research programmes. TANUH’s core team, comprising executives, engineers, programme managers, and research staff, with significant industry experience, enables the translation of health-AI technologies from the lab to the population scale.

TANUH’s goal is to design and deploy tools for early detection, risk prediction, monitoring and personalised solutions across high-burden conditions such as oral cancer, breast cancer, retinal diseases, diabetes, and mental health.

These tools will help frontline health workers, improve primary and hospital care, and include human decision-making to make sure that the care is safe and effective. The solutions are designed to be used directly where patients are treated, follow responsible AI standards, and are created and tested together with doctors and researchers at top national institutions like AIIMS, New Delhi.

“We are excited to establish TANUH, an AI Centre of Excellence in Healthcare. This multidisciplinary centre will deliver scalable AI solutions for NCDs like oral and breast cancer, exemplified by our award-winning Aarogya Aarohan app. TANUH aligns well with the ‘Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India’ vision, and seeks to enable accessible healthcare across the country,” said Professor G. Rangarajan, Director, IISc and Chair, Board of Directors, TANUH.

TANUH has already launched Aarogya Aarohan, an application developed by the CoE’s Oral Cancer Screening team, in collaboration with AIIMS, ARTPARK, Biocon Foundation, BITS Pilani (Goa), KLE Society’s Institute of Dental Sciences, Triveous, and other clinical and industrial partners, with guidance from the Oral Cancer Task Force.
