Yakshagana, India’s own ‘opera’, making waves in Europe

Founded in 2018, Apurva Beleyur’s Yakshamitraru Germany not only presents prasangas, but also teaches the nuances of this traditional art to Europeans.

Yakshagana, the traditional art form of coastal Karnataka, has found an enthusiastic audience across Europe, thanks to the passion and dedication of Yakshamitraru Germany.

The troupe’s journey, marked by perseverance, cultural pride and artistic excellence, has become a remarkable example of how a band of expats has kept the Yakshagana tradition alive on foreign shores. Founded in 2018 in Frankfurt, Yakshamitraru Germany is the brainchild of Apurva Beleyur, whose Yakshagana roots run deep. He is the son of renowned artiste Beleyuru Krishnamurthy, who was with the Saligrama Yakshagana troupe for 28 years. Despite this strong artistic lineage, his father initially encouraged Apurva to pursue a different career path, fearing the struggles associated with life as an artiste.

After moving to Germany in 2015, Apurva found that his Yakshagana connection was too profound to ignore. Desiring to bring the art form to newer audiences, he discussed with his friend Ajeeth Prabhu the possibility of starting a troupe.

The idea took shape soon and Yakshamitraru Germany was born. Today, the troupe has five dedicated members — Apurva, Shashidhar Nairy, Shri Hari Hosamane, Prateek Hegde Bengle and Sushma Ravindra. Though they work regular jobs in banks and automobile companies, they make time to pursue the art form.

They have performed in 25 cities across Germany, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Spain and Denmark. They import all traditional costumes and ornaments from India with support from Sanjaya Beleyur and Shashikanth Shetty from Karkala.

Apurva told TNSE that a student from Sweden conducted an extensive research on Yakshamitraru Germany, which has been published by Uppsala University. Another student in Germany is pursuing a PhD focusing on the troupe, and a documentary is slated for release in 2026 in Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch and German.

Since 2024, Yakshamitraru Germany has been hosting an annual cultural event, Yaksha Sankranthi, in German theatres. The event highlights Indian performers in Germany, who have made significant contributions to promote traditional art forms. The troupe helps Yakshagana artistes in India with funds raised through events in Europe, Apurva said.

In collaboration with Dheemahi Kala Kendra, Sirsi, the troupe conducts Yakshagana training camps across Europe. Indian students from Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Malta, Italy and Germany attend Yakshagana classes online. Plans are now on to start offline sessions for 20 students.

He said the troupe stages two-hour shows as well as 30-minute short duration episodes. It performs ‘prasangas’ such as Lava Kusha, Lankadahana, Bhasmasura Mohini, Sudharshana Vijaya, Jambavathi Kalyana, Vali Vadhe and Kamsa Vadhe. For German-speaking audiences, the shows will be in English.

If the show is in Kannada, the troupe provides booklets of its English-translation to help audiences follow the storyline. English Yakshagana shows are becoming popular and German communities have booked two more shows for 2026.

Their efforts have been acknowledged by Indian consulates in Germany, France, Spain, and Denmark.

In 2023, Apurva hosted Yakshadhruva Patla Satish Shetty from the Patla Foundation, whose visit inspired the emergence of two to three Yakshagana troupes in Germany.

What began as an individual’s longing to reconnect with his artistic roots, has now blossomed into a movement that is entertaining global audiences.

The Kannada Shabdartha Kosha stands as a capstone to his decades of rigorous linguistic discipline and dedication to the language.

The Kannada Shabdartha Kosha (Kannada dictionary), authored by late scholar and writer T K Anantanarayana, was unveiled at the Indian Institute of Culture in Basavanagudi on Wednesday.

At the event, the speakers paid rich tribute to Anantanarayana, a former government school teacher, whose comprehensive scholarly output was primarily authored between the 1930s and 1960s. The Kannada Shabdartha Kosha stands as a capstone to his decades of rigorous linguistic discipline and dedication to the language. A particularly poignant highlight was the acknowledgement of the author’s sons — Prof A Sreenivasan (80) and A Pattabhiraman (77) — in the completion of the final compilation, preservation and publication of the work.

Mysuru-based Skanray plans regional airline

Services proposed from Mysuru with three ATR-72 aircraft by mid-April 2026.

The company is preparing to launch ‘Skanjet Aviation’ from Mysuru, with a Rs. 150-200 crore regional airline plan, positioning the city as its operational base to tap growing demand for regional air travel and the Government’s push to improve connectivity to smaller cities.

Skanray Technologies Managing Director Vishwaprasad Alva told Star of Mysore this morning that, subject to regulatory approvals and operating licences, the company aims to launch air services from Mysuru by mid-April 2026.

“Five years ago, we discussed strengthening air services from Mysuru with then MP Prathap Simha, following the Centre’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) Regional Connectivity Scheme. Since then, we have studied the aviation ecosystem in depth, engaging with aircraft manufacturers, operators, investors and aggregators. We believe now the time is right,” Alva said.

Amaravati as a connectivity hub

‘Skanjet’ plans to launch operations from Mysuru, while now-developing Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh as a connectivity hub for both domestic and intl. routes.

“Mysuru makes strategic sense. It is a hub for exhibitions and health tourism, with major projects such as a semiconductor hub coming up. It is also an edu-tech centre and a future Electronics System Design and Manufacturing hub,” Alva noted.

The company has held discussions with both the State and Central Governments and is awaiting licences and statutory clearances from the Civil Aviation authorities. Policy support and assurances from the Centre and the State will be critical during the initial phase, Alva said.

Three ATR-72 aircraft

Skanjet’ proposes to begin operations with three ATR-72 aircraft, connecting Mysuru with Hyderabad, Goa, Mangaluru, Kochi, Chennai, Tirupati and Mumbai. The fleet is expected to expand to six aircraft within a year.

“We estimate an initial investment of Rs. 150-200 crore, with leased aircraft. Discussions are underway with aircraft manufacturers and leasing firms. We are not people with deep pockets. Capital will largely come from close contacts and high-net-worth individuals willing to back the venture,” Alva said, adding that funding will be raised through a mix of equity and debt.

He said, Skanray has sought assurances of fair and consistent policy treatment from both Governments.  “If policy remains stable, a regional airline can break even within two years,” he added.

The move comes amid growing scrutiny of market concentration in Indian aviation, following IndiGo’s recent large-scale flight cancellations that stranded thousands of passengers. IndiGo currently commands around 64 percent of the domestic market.
